Excerpts from live performance recording of the Vespers of 1610 by Claudio Monteverdi. Performed and recorded on April 17, 2016 by the University of King's College Chapel Choir, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Directed by Paul Halley. With soloists Hélène Brunet (soprano), Janelle Lucyk (soprano), Sarah Myatt, (mezzo-soprano), Charles Daniels (tenor), Philippe Gagné (tenor), Martin Auclair (bass); David Greenberg (concertmaster); instrumentalists from Canada, U.S.A., and the U.K., and the boy choristers of Capella Regalis Men & Boys Choir.

On the eve of Valentine's Day, drama and delicacy are intertwined as soprano Janelle Lucyk and mezzo-soprano Sarah Myatt explore music of love. Baroque aria’s stemming from some of history's most celebrated romantic figures, Cesar and Cleopatra, Orpheus and Eurydice, with a hearty main course of Monteverdi duets. The pieces chosen fall under seconda prattica or stile moderno style, where music is governed by its text, and lavish musical ornamentation is enjoyed to better highlight poetry. As such, on February 13th, hear exquisite sets of poetry which underlay art songs by composers including Purcell, Dowland, and Handel, revealing raw human emotions: love, jealousy, desire.

The Nine Maidens with tenor/lutenist Kerry Bursey
Delightful songs of heroines and heroes who cleverly escape danger and find the comfort of love. English traditional songs tell of age old expeditions, daring escapes and exotic delights, accompanied by lute, violin and guitar. Ayres by Dowland and Purcell recount the transience of good fortune in the life of seafaring voyageurs.

The Wounded Hussar

Alone on the banks of the dark rolling Danube,
Fair Adelaide roamed when the battle was o’er.
“Oh where then” she cried, “have you wandered my true love?
Or where do you wither and bleed on the shore?”
She travelled a while the tears her eyes flooding,
Through the dead and the dying she walked near and far,
Till she found by the river all bleeding and dying,
By the light of the moon her poor wounded hussar.

From his bosom that heaved, one last torrent was streaming,
And pale was his face deep marked by a scar,
And pale were those eyes once expressively beaming,
Eyes that had melted in love, kindled in war.
How sad was poor Adelaide’s heart at the sight,
And how bitter she wept for her victim of war.
“Have you come then” he cried, “this last sorrowful night for,
To cheer your lone heart of the wounded hussar?”

“You live then” she cried, “heaven’s mercy relieving,
Each anguishing wound shall forbid me to mourn.”
“Oh no my last fancy in my bosom is heaving,
No light of the morn shall to Henry return.”
“You charmer of life so tender and true,
Take my love to the babe that awaits me afar.”
Then his faltering tongue could scarce murmur adieu,
When he died in her arms, her poor wounded hussar...

Brussels Chamber Choir

During her time in Brussels, Janelle worked under Xavier Deprez, director of music at the magnificent Cathédrale de Saints-Michel-et-Gudule. She sang there regularly and formed Voces Desuper, an ensemble performing at services, and especially at the Te Deum ceremony for the King and Queen of Belgium.
